May Garden Tour and Chapter Picnic
Saturday, May 13 (rain or shine)
:Garden writer Nancy Ondra, co-author of The Perennial Gardener's Design Primer, gardens in Upper Bucks County. Her rural four-acre property includes managed-meadow areas and cottage style gardens with special emphasis on ornamental grasses and anything-but-green foliage plants. Recently certified by the National Wildlife Federation as a Backyard Wildlife Habitat, it also includes non-native "wildlife" in the form of two alpacas, which contribute an endless supply of organic fertilizer for the gardens.
From 3:00 until 7:00 pm
Chris and Bob Stamper’s garden
6826 Ridge Road,
Zionsville, PA 18092
br610-967-2977
Our garden occupies about three acres of a four-acre lot. It sits on a rising hill (700' to 800' above sea level from driveway to hilltop.) Because of ancient hedgerows and farmers’ stone walls, the wedge-shaped lot is divided in interesting ways. Except for the acre of woodland at the upper edge of the lot and trees along the stony areas all trees were planted by us. We have been gardening the property for eight years now. Some of the areas are pretty well finished, others still in progress. We have three small ponds and many planted islands filled mostly with rhododendrons, both large and small leaf, azaleas and ornamental trees. We are filling shaded beds with mostly native species while sunny beds include one for grasses and another for iris. There is actually little hardscape since all of the work has been done by just the two of us. Some areas have a Japanese influence. And, yes, we do have some rock garden areas and many troughs.
Potluck picnic at the Stamper’s:
5:00 pm. libations and food set up; Picnic meal shortly thereafter.
Picnic guests are requested to bring a salad, vegetable, entrée or dessert to serve 6-8 people. The chapter will supply beverages, a ham, and paper goods. Please bring lawn chairs to assure we have seats for everyone.
Directions to Nancy Ondra’s Garden:
Take I-476 (Blue Route) to the Northeast Extension of the PA Turnpike. At the Quakertown Exit 44 keep to the right out of the tollbooth, and make a right onto Route 663. Proceed for about 2 miles. Then make a left onto Kumry Road . Kumry curves off to the left soon afterward, but do not follow it –keep going straight onto Fels Road instead. The Ondra garden is about 1 mile off of Route 663. Look for a log cabin in the middle of an open field.
Directions from the Ondra garden to the Stamper garden will be available at the Ondra garden.
Directions to Stamper Garden:
Take I-476 (Blue Route) to the Northeast Extension of the PA Turnpike. At the Quakertown Exit 44 merge onto PA 663 South toward Pottstown. After 4 ½ miles, turn right onto Main Street/PA 29. Shortly thereafter, turn right onto Pine Tree Road, then left onto Spring Hill Road. Soon turn a slight right onto Orthaus, which becomes Ridge Rd. Look for #6826.
Chapter Spring Plant Sale: Saturday, June 10
Chapter plant sales provide us an opportunity to share with others the plants that have proved worthwhile to us and to obtain plants that have proved worthwhile to other members. They also provide funds for our speakers and for renting our meeting rooms. Bring your favorite plants to the June 10th Plant Sale and then get busy propagating more plants for the fall plant sale which will be September 9th this year.
