We are all well aware that among the members of the Delaware Valley Chapter there is a wealth of gardening knowledge and experience. At this meeting volunteer presenters will share with us their special experiences in gardening. Here is an opportunity to learn from rock gardening friends about their favorite plants, places, tools, products, and techniques.

The Private Life of Trillium, John Gyer
No trillium seed in John’s garden has privacy. He snoops at it during pollination, germination, and its seven-year growth into a mature flower. He photographs the process to share with us the activity hidden under a blanket of soil AND he does all this in just an hour.

Saturday, April 14, 2007 at 10: AM — Tyler
Arboretum Plant Show registration 9:00-9:30 am, with member voting before
the program. Jonathan Wright’s illustrated lecture will feature his plant
travels and adventures on behalf of Chanticleer, always keeping in mind how
plants grow in the wild and how that relates to their best uses in the
spectacular show gardens of Chanticleer. Plan to stay and tour the grounds of
Tyler Arboretum, one of the largest arboreta at 650 acres, which will feature
early spring flowers and foliage. Highlights are the Painter trees (named for
the Painter brothers whose home this was), Painter Library and Lachford Hall,
the Stopford Family Meadow Maze, the Pinetum, the Native Woodland Walk, and the
Bluebird Houses.
This special spring meeting is our annual plant show plus an
entrancing lecture by Jonathan Wright, gardener at
Chanticleer.

Chapter Spring Plant Sale: Saturday, June 9
Chapter plant sales provide us an opportunity to share with others the plants that have proved worthwhile to us and to obtain plants that have proved worthwhile to other members. They also provide funds for our speakers and for renting our meeting rooms. Bring your favorite plants to the June 9th Plant Sale and then get busy propagating more plants for the fall plant sale which will be September 8th this year. (Members only)
Robbins Nature Center, Ambler directions
The meeting will feature field
trips to Dolly Sods Wilderness Area, Blackwater Falls State Park. The Dolly
Sods, at 4200 feet, is an Alpine boreal ecosystem with amazing displays of
Kalmia and Rhododendron as well as acid bog flora. Blackwater Falls is a lower
altitude and has a Appalachian woodland flora. Both of these sites are refugia,
places where plants plants remained after the Wisconsin Glacier retreated.
Speakers will include Bill Cullina of Garden
in The Woods, Bill Grafton of West Viginia University, and Bonnie Issac of The
Carnegie Museum. They will discuss the plants we see on the field trips and why
they are there The Canaan Valley Resort lies amid the beautiful hills of West Virginia as
well as the wonderful scenery there is a golf course, swimming pool, tennis
courts as well as many interesting hiking
